1909: First Town football game

October 16

The Town’s first football team plays against Ipswich and wins (12-6) with Raymond O. Brackett, owner of the Rockmere Hotel, as the head coach, amid some controversy by parents not wanting their sons to play in such a dangerous contact sport. Brackett argued that the team represented Marblehead’s fighting spirit that created American freedom. George P. Campbell, the High School’s principal, was in charge of training the team.
