1776: Glover’s Regiment evacuates Washington’s army

August 29

10:00 p.m. Glover Regiment begins the evacuation of Washington’s army from Long Island and saves the army in less than 10 hours of skillful rowing and sailing in arduous conditions, avoiding being cut off by a stunned British force of 10 frigates and 20 gunboats and ships of war. Had the evacuation failed, Washington’s Army, Glover’s Regiment and the American Revolution might easily have been lost, according to historians.
