As businesses in Marblehead have come and gone over the years, the visual landmarks that represented those businesses — their well-known signs — have disappeared from view. Fortunately, many of these signs have been preserved in the Sign Museum located in the lower level of Abbot Hall.
The Historical Commission has created an exhibit of over 75 signs chronicling the commercial and public history of Marblehead in the 19th and 20th centuries. The display includes signs, labels, photographs of early storefronts, a floor map of the location of the shops represented by the signs and a video of the history of many of the signs. Stores, businesses, schools, churches and municipal buildings are represented.

One of the exhibit’s signs is the Shepard Pharmacy sign, originally located at 98 Washington Street, across from the Old Town House, as shown in this earlier postcard.
